Chapter TWO: Pure

Alice ran her hands through her dark hair as she stared at the ceiling. She closed her eyes to reminisce on what happened the previous evening.

“Was it all a dream?” She mumbled and pushed herself up, struggling, due to the pain in her back. “Ughh—I guess not.”

She sat up in bed with her legs hanging over the side. She scratched her head and glanced up at her the clock on her wall. She rubbed her eyes slightly, squinting to see the time.

“Four o’clock? That can’t be right,” she looked down at her watch, “shit! I’m two hours late!” She jumped out of bed grabbing her shirt and pulling on her shoes, and within minutes was out the door and down the road.

“Have a good day Pumpkin!”

--

She arrived at school in shambles; her coat was hanging off her shoulder, her socks were askew, and missed a button on her vest, not to mention her knotted hair, carelessly tied into two ponytails. She sauntered into the main office and came face to face with a snooty looking woman with pointed glasses and a phone on her ear.

“Hold please—,” the woman said putting the phone down, “what do you want young lady?”

“I-I’m late I need a pass for class.” Alice said trying her best to straighten herself out.

The woman looked at her watch and a sneer came over her pointed, almost wicked face. “You little lady, are over an hour late!” The woman put the phone back to her ear. “And you know what that means—

“DETENTION!”

Alice’s face dropped and she meandered out of the office and to the broom closet where detention was held. She knocked a few times and slowly opened the door. The room was lined with four desks along the center and in the back of the room were a bunch of bookcases. The room was empty aside from her and the man sitting at the front of the room. She looked over at him and felt as if his eyes were burning through her.

“Sign in.” He said dropping a clipboard toward the end of his desk.

She gulped and walked over to the edge of his desk. She couldn’t help but glance at him slightly as she signed her name, it was almost as if she was signing her life away. She heard about this man—Mr. Heinrich—the most pompous, crude, and the most hated teacher in the school. He had very distinctive features, especially his eyes that were dark and almost drained of life. His eyebrows jetted slightly upward giving him an intense, hateful look. His hair was light brown and he was balding slightly toward the back. His lips were thin, almost like a slit on his pudgy face. He had massive hands that he tapped impatiently on his large beer belly.

“Sit.” He said pointing at the desk in front of him.

She sat down quickly and set her books on the floor by her feet. She glanced up at him and noticed him mumbling to himself as he looked over the sign in sheet. Perhaps she did sign her life away.

“Alice T. Knox.” He glanced up at her. “Your parents—

“How did you hear about my parents?” she asked quickly. Her assertiveness surprised him and he tapped his pen on the pad in front of him.

“It’s all over the news Alice.” He clipped the pen cap repeatedly and looked up at her. “Why are you in here, may I ask?”

“I was late.” She mumbled as more of what happened last night began to flood through her mind. Her back stung as she sat back in her chair.

He nodded. “I’m sorry—about what happened.”

She nodded. “Thanks.” She fumbled with her fingers and began to somewhat twiddle her thumbs.

“Do you need to talk to someone—go to the guidance office?” He leaned back in his chair and rested it against the wall.

“No, I’d rather not.” She said, her words ending in a nervous giggle.

“I understand.”

There was an awkward silence occasionally broken by the sound of the ticking clock. “It’s about lunch time,” Mr. Heinrich said casually, “you can get something to eat if you’d like.”

She smiled and started to get up but quickly fell to the ground, grasping her shoulders. Mr. Heinrich got up from behind his desk to aid her.

“Are you alright?” He took her by her upper arms and attempted to lift her up. She pushed him aside and stumbled to the floor. He stood up in confusion as he watched her struggle on the floor. “Alice!”

She sat on her legs and hunched over as if in an effort to hurl. Her back remained arched and her shoulder blades protruded slightly. She closed her eyes and began to sob and breath loudly.

“Alice! Alice!” He gripped her by the shoulders as she burrowed her head into his chest in efforts to drown out her yelps.

She gripped his shirt, sobbing through her clenched teeth. He held her in efforts to comfort her and noticed thin trickles of blood dripping down her back as her shoulder blades began to protrude further.

“Alice!” He took his wallet from his pocket. “Alice, bite on it.” She took the leather between her teeth in efforts to not bite her tongue.

Little by little the blood flow began to increase as she let out an ear-piercing scream, and the skin on her back was ripped apart. Mr. Heinrich clenched his teeth and closed his eyes as blood splattered ubiquitously. Once the screaming stopped he opened his eyes, holding a limp Alice in his hands. His eyes widened and his mouth gapped open at the sight that lay before him.

Aside from the blood, there erect was a pair of magnificent wings fluttering softly, in sync with Alice’s faint breathing patterns.

“Hold on kid, hold on Alice.” He said as he lifted her up in his arms and ran out of the door and through the halls of the Misery Specialty School; halls aligned with faces of shock, dismay, and confusion.

Alice looked up at Mr. Heinrich as he carried her through the silent hallways. The pain was overwhelming and she couldn’t keep her eyes open and the last thing she saw was the man that everyone hated—the man who was trying desperately to save her life.

To Be Continued in Chapter THREE: Angelic
