Life is like a river
By Katie Wilson

Life is like a river
It touches us all
It’s surface sparkles in my eyes, playing tricks on yours
and it smells fresh and crisp, filling my nose with its purity
without even taking a drink I can taste it, cool and refreshing on my tongue
as water rushes over my feet, sending shivers up my spine
and the rush of water splashing against the rocks drowns all other sounds
But it can fill your mouth and mar your skin should you fall

I sit here at the edge of Mary’s River
and I think of him
And I wonder, if I should fall, where would the river take me?
Maybe it would caress my mind and hold me gentle
And lead me to calmer waters

Or maybe it would savage my reality and drown my heart
when it leads me instead to rapids

Still it carries us somewhere
Teaching
Because even the old and wise
Have things they could learn
Things they should learn

Dare I cry and the waters grow darker

Weaksauce he says
still I try to remember if that means good or bad
And dare I look through
The crystalline tears of regret
Or are they a rainbow looking glass of hope

And I haverocks as my balloon weights
To keep me from drifting away
But I’m walking on water
With just a word, just a smile

Though my heart is broken today
Tomorrow I’ll try again, anew
As if I’d never been hurt

And amber light glows river bottom rocks mahogany
in early morning through watery lenses
Touching past hurts and healing those fresh
should we let current carry us down river

And when I die
Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein
God knows I don’t want to be an angel
Let me be a river

The river teaches us of life
guides us, and tells of truth

Through calm and through rapids
the river forever flows
