Prayer for a Good Dog

--

I tried to find a poem,

Buttermilk,

That spoke about how we were.

But I was not your mistress,

And you were never my servant,

So none of them fit.

--

Eventually, I started to wonder if,

We were then unique.

For you weren't really a dog,

And I was never really a little girl.

--

Are you truly gone forever?

Have you already forgotten me?

--

I wish I had more faith,

For perhaps then I could see you.

But I cannot come when you call.

I am still, unlike you, only human.

--

So in my mind I have only a glance

From you.

That last moment in which

You eyes held everything

That we ever were

As she lifted you away,

And carried you

Beyond my sight,

Beyond my sphere.

Our eyes met,

And you knew...

--

So now I bury you

In the only place for all good dogs.

In your best friend's heart.

Amen.
