Soft humming

Sound of peace

Sweetest melody

Echoing in the air

Staling in a dark refuge

Soft humming

Sings of care

Compasses a loss

One childishly ignored

For an elusive hope

Fragile arms crossed

Knees held protectively

Back and Forth

Again and again

A steady movement

Ceaseless humming

Forced rhythm

Forth and Back

A child cries

Silent sorrow

Always moving

Slowly humming

Painful calling

Back and Forth

Forth and Back

A childish voice hums

Replacing an absent one

Another tear

One more pain

Yet other sorrow

Brought by a shout

Ignoring coldness

Cutting that song

Deaf and uncaring

Eyes are forced shut

Tears sliding past

As the hum turns louder

Unable to drown the screams

But the child still moves

Ignoring that reality

In favour of a daydream

Place with no angry voices

With no closed doors

No constant balance

Or that barely heard hum

Where other voice takes over

Telling of hopes and dreams

Hands move

Covering pained ears

Protecting dead hopes

And the hum quietens

Turning to shouted silence

Message clearer in muted yells

“I’m here. Can’t you see?”

But it remains unanswered

And old eyes open

Tired glint in their depths

Oh poor innocence lost

Murdered without pity

And the humming returns

As no one comes in reply

Back and Forth

Forth and Back

Poor dear child

Locked so far away

If you could only hear

The similar hums and yells

Sounding in this world
