he burns love letters
while she cherishes them
carries them in a tightly sealed box
- along with her heart ( so proud it glows )
he once believed in fairy tales & now he thinks they are sugar-
coated fantasies made so children can believe in d r e a m s
while she ponders & waits ( oh, she hopes ) for her prince to come
he leaves fractured hearts burning in the flame
& she swallows the key without a second thought
