Chapter 6: Business is Booming

Kimi sat on the sofa in the living room of the penthouse with Akashima Rai and Miyamoto Asuka. As she blew out the candles on the chocolate mud cake, they clapped and Asuka took photos.

“Happy birthday, my dear,” Akashima said, smiling.

“You shouldn’t be here, Father,” Kimi complained, but with a grin. “You shouldn’t have cancelled your meeting.”

“You told me nothing beneficial would come out of it and I believe you,” Akashima remarked. “And besides, I would rather spend this special day with you. Here’s your present. It’s a family heirloom; keep it safe.”

He passed Kimi a small red vinyl box with a gold ribbon on the top. Kimi opened it and squealed when she saw what was inside. It was a gold, square-faced dress watch with little diamonds encrusted around the face.

“Are those real?” Kimi asked as she put the watch on her wrist and hugged Akashima.

“Of course,” Akashima laughed. “Only the best for my favourite daughter!”

“I’m your only daughter,” Kimi reminded him. “But I shouldn’t be...”

She looked pointedly from Akashima to Asuka and back again. Asuka blushed a deep red and giggled nervously. Akashima raised his eyebrows and then smiled.

“I’ll go and get some plates for that cake,” he said before getting up and walking to the kitchen.

“I’ll get us some drinks,” Asuka said, following Akashima. “Then you can open my present.”

When they went into the kitchen, Kimi savoured the time alone. As she looked at the watch she thought about how far she’d come. She was seventeen now. It had been five years since her real, Chinese father had... sold her.

She marvelled. That was the first time in a long time since she had thought about the Long family. She wondered how they were. Of course, she could never see them again; Akashima would not have it.

She moved away from the thoughts of her previous life to her first day in Tokyo. She remembered the vision she had had while out shopping with Asuka, who had become her best friend.

She had seen Akashima make an important business decision the wrong way and his business had crumbled. She had told him about it, and the next day, he was two hundred million dollars richer.

Ever since then, her Foresight had become more powerful. She had frequent dreams at night about her Nai Nai. Nai Nai tutored her in using her Foresight while she slept. Sometimes she didn’t remember everything that she had been taught, but she was becoming more powerful. Her visions were more detailed and vivid. She could see further into the future.

She remembered a time about three years ago when she had woken from a dream that her powers had made her levitate, and she felt herself fall onto her bed from a height. That had scared her a lot and when she told her Nai Nai about it the next night, she said Kimi could control it, all in good time.

Asuka and Akashima returned from the kitchen with glasses of champagne and plates for the cake. Then Akashima’s cell phone rang. He answered it and his happy expression steadily changed to a solemn one.

“Arigatoo,” he said before he hung up. He turned to Kimi with an apologetic face. “I’m sorry, Kimi, but I have to go. Another tycoon has demanded that he see me at once. I promise I’ll make it up to you,” he added.

“That’s fine, Father,” Kimi said. “Go ahead. I’ll see you tonight.”

Akashima bent down and kissed Kimi’s forehead.

“Goodbye Asuka,” he said, before marching into the elevator.

Asuka sighed and took a sip of her champagne.

Kimi lay back on the sofa and absentmindedly cracked her knuckles.

“How about we go to the movies?” Asuka suggested. “I hear that new Kaneshiro Takeshi movie is quite good.”

Kimi was about to answer when she felt herself black out and disappear.

She was in the boardroom of Akashima Technologies. At the head of the table was Akashima and at the other end was a man in a sharp suit. Kimi realised he was the tycoon who had wanted to meet Akashima. The image zoomed in on his hands. He was missing the first joint of each little finger.

The tell-tale sign of the Yakuza.

Akashima was doing business with a mobster?

The image of the boardroom suddenly disappeared and was replaced with a vision of a stairwell in the apartment building. More than twenty men armed with semi-automatic guns and some even with katana’s ran up the stairwell. Each had a black bandanna tied over their heads and the Kanji of the Yakuza showed on the top.

Kimi abruptly awoke from the vision with a jolt and stared at Asuka.

“Asuka,” she said, her heart pounding heavily in her rib cage. “We are in deep trouble.”
