Tonight

The lights sparkle in the distance

like the flickering flame of a candle in the wind

The water laps against the rocks,

trying to get up higher, trying to reach further.

Fruitlessly

The breeze carries the faint scent of the water.

The night sky tells of tales untold.

The trees are slowly shedding their leaves preparing to stand bare,

stand naked, un-bowing and exposed in front of the world.

Showing their strength and perseverance to all.

I wonder if this breeze I feel has grazed his cheek before;

If this air I breathe has touched his lips.

If this sky I see holds his magnificent gaze;

If these waves have sung to him as they sing to me.

I feel enveloped by his being, one with him, as I sit out here alone.

I feel whole and content.

I wonder if this wind carries with it a sweet melody sung by his voice.

I wonder if the breeze carries sweet thoughts uttered by his tongue.

I wonder if the night holds the essence of my being for him, as it does his--for me.
