This small girl fell in love

This small girl said a prayer

A prince, a kingdom, a white horse, and armor

None of this did she want.

This small girl wanted a love returned

This small girl wanted nothing more

Not just anyone could return her love

This she did not want.

No, it had to be him.

The man who wore the invisible crown,

Whose kingdom was a small apartment

Whose white horse was the family car,

Whose armor was a tee-shirt with

A witty design.

This small girl reached out with her heart

This small girl wished for too much

He loved her once, and twice

He loved her for a long time;

Eternity, she thought.

This small girl...

This small girl...

He promised forever; a palace, a horse

He promised impenetrable armor to protect her

Never would she cry for him, he proclaimed

For he would love her true.

She believed him, relied on him, and breathed him.

She reached out with all she had

The man began to turn as spring turns to

Autumn

For each broken promise appeared a scar.

This little girl got hurt

This little girl tumbled down

This little girl forgot how to

Get back up.

This little girl...
