I watch,
as the world falls asleep around me.
light dims as feet hesitate
and voices hush,
in preparation for sunset.
The sky slowly fades
from turquoise to indigo
to gilded pink laced with crimson,
and finally settling into deep-sea violet.
Everything softens.
corners turn to curves,
jerky movements blend together and drag as if through water
color melts into shades of gray.
quietly draw the curtains on this unforgiving day,
turn sandpaper to velvet
and whiskey into cream-
let everything be it’s opposite
under the transforming moonlight.
pass from sharp and stabbing day
into dreams that soothe and caress

(my soft-flesh heart?
she too changes
freezes into another bone that cracks and breaks
when the starlight touches her.)
