Among the tombs
“Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.” (Mark 5:5)
Can Your presence
be as compassionate
as the silent company of the tombs,
the hopeless disinterest of darkness?
Is Your presence
as dreary?
Can Your comfort
be as palpable
as the solace of crimson oozing
from my hated skin?
Is Your comfort
as fake?
Can Your forgiveness
do away with my guilt,
my failure, my fault, my corruption,
my prison, my chains, my self?
Will Your forgiveness
change death into life?
Shall I remain
in the bleak safety of habit –
or shall I
dare
to believe
in wonders?
