Dear Leaf
-
“Leaf,” she whispers. “Leaf, what’s wrong?”
Leaf says nothing and turns a way in a flourish of green and gold and rustles and crackly dry autumn murmurs. Why is Leaf so sad? She thinks, eyes filling over with sea drops. Leaf is her happiness, Leaf is her best friend, and Leaf is Leaf.
Once Leaf found her crying in a tree, all alone, and then Leaf sat with her until she could stop the rain. “Ashy, Ash-Ash, be careful of the moon, but heed her advice. She knows much. Don’t let your guard down with her, but don’t mistrust her.”
Ash didn’t understand Leaf. She still doesn’t understand sometimes.
