Your guilty conscience turns you in;
Did you think I wouldn’t feel it?
How, exactly, did you plan to conceal it,
When such things are all that birds will talk about;
I can feel the light in my eyes
Fading in and out
Till your name echoes in the empty spaces
Along with all the other faces
I’ve forgotten-
Hollowness stretches in me,
Waking outward, from my center-
You could always hold forever
In a moment, if you chose;
But that’s the way the story goes
And so, my love, have you,
Not that you weren’t expected to;
But once you start expecting things
You know they’ll never show.

You and I, we knew how to shape
Moments, stories,
But the rape
Of decency and glories
Leaves me bloodlessly betrayed;
If you would’ve stayed
Things might be better-
Might be worse-
For Never holds a comfort
As Forever holds a curse;
Look at me, my darling,
You smell pleasantly of fear;
You will search for me, my darling,
But not find me;
I’m not here.
