Across The Sea

Whispers, whispers in the night,

Breezes softly calling me

To the garden. What delights

Await me there across the sea?

Will those white towers I espy

Harbour joy inside their gates?

Pristine and sparkling ‘gainst the sky,

Reflected in the limpid straits.

Silver trees and verdant palms;

O’er all, the white gulls fly.

Shining rivers and herbal balms

Near to those towers lie.

Harps chime beside the falls.

No lament their song now,

Those who sing in distant halls

Or on swans’ alban prows.

Fire of the West, dear to my heart,

How I long thy light to see!

How long must I then live apart

So far across the Sea?
