Constance Gosselin

A New Friend

“Constance! Constance, come quickly!” Shouted my boyfriend, Skylar Tate. Everybody called him Sky though.

“What? What’s the matter?” I asked, rushing from my kitchen (where I was cooking dinner for my family) to the front door where Sky had run in. He was out of breath, and his normally light brown spiked up hair was matted to his head with sweat. His sky blue eyes (no pun intended) were glazed over with some sort of excitement.

“Just please come with me! I have to show you something!” He exclaimed.

“Sky, I’m cooking! If I don’t have this meal done before my family comes then you know that heads will roll!”

“I know, but can’t you just… digress for a few minutes. The thing that I have to show you is just downstairs in my car.”

“Sky, did you run all the way up the steps?” I asked, hoping that this wasn’t the case. My apartment was six floors up from the ground.

“Um, yeah I did.” He answered some what sheepishly.

“You are unbelievable!” I scolded.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Will you please come with me now?”

“I suppose. Just give me a second to turn off the burners on the stove.” I sighed, turning back around to return to the kitchen. When that task was done I followed Sky down to his car (using the elevator this time) to see what all the fuss was about.

It was a cool, crisp October evening and the feel of the gentle caress of the light fall wind comforted me. Fall was my favorite season. The colors of the leaves on the trees were so beautiful, and most of the time the weather was like this night: calm and cool.

Sky gently extracted a box from the backseat of his car. He opened the lid slightly, enough for me to stick my hand through.

“Stick your hand in here.” He said.

I was slightly taken aback by his blunt comment.

“Stick my hand in there? Are you crazy? You know I don’t stick my hand in any old place… and I realized that that just sounded wrong, but anyway, you have to tell me what’s inside it first!”

“Uh, no. You have to stick your hand in here.” He commanded again.

Sensing that I definitely wasn’t going to be able to get out of this one; I cautiously stuck my hand in the box. There was something very furry inside. It was also very smooth and soft like the finest silk. A questioning look creased my brow. What the heck could this silky, velvety softness possibly be?

“What are you going on about?” I asked, extracting my hand from the box.

He flashed his cute smile that I had fallen in love with. He only winked and removed the lid from the box. Inside was the cutest little golden retriever anyone could have ever come upon.

“Sky! He’s so pretty!” I exclaimed.

“He is isn’t he, and he is all yours. Happy Birthday, honey.”

I gave Sky a peck on the lips and carefully extracted the dog from the box. He let out a small yelp and licked my hand. I giggled. His fur was not only smooth but his it had a beautiful shine. I pulled Sky into a hug. I was so grateful that I had him.

“What are you going to name this little guy?” Sky asked, caressing the dog’s satin fur.

“Ramses.”

“Ramses? What?”

I could only laugh at the surprised look on his face.
