The Unwritten Code

Everyday it’s always the same shit on the streets

Kids hitting kids, selling drugs to make ends meet

Mothers say they love, but are too cracked out to care

They provide their kids with shelter, but in reality, aren’t quite there

Please let’s not just lay the blame solely upon the ladies

Fathers too should be attending to their babies

Unfortunately, a lot have chosen to ditch and bail

And the rest are alcoholics or spend their time in jail

You see, some kids were born without a chance

But society doesn’t understand why they don’t get up and dance

He hates his mom for snorting lines

That’s why he’s out committing crimes

His father disowned him

And society stoned him

But he’s got aspirations and a dream

He just needs to find a river and follow the stream

She’s lost and confused in her place

Some days she wears her hair to cover her face

She’s an intelligent girl with a musical vision

But flees from relationships at risk of collision

She’s seen her mother’s broken heart,

And how hard it is to get a fresh start

Every time they near the shore

The world drops them a desert to struggle through some more

At times it gets unbearable and they want to breakdown

But always keep going in search of the sound

Of waves pounding against the beach

Even though it seems impossible and out of reach

They’ve grown together and shared a lot

But he’s always in jail, so she sits at home and smokes pot

Waiting for him to come back around

She hates every minute spent in this town

He used to love her years before

But now she’s she that she loves him more

They both are keeping quiet about their secret

Although neither one really wants to keep it

Some things just don’t need to be said;

Which is apparent when they lay side by side in bed

He touches her face and brushes her lips

Runs his fingers down the side of her hips

She responds with a smile and kisses him deep

They’re entangled together and drifting to sleep

But by morning, when he awakes, she is gone

Due to the fear of losing the one

Who means most to her but she doesn’t know why

So she lays back and wishes to the sky…

Now she’s grown and ready to tell him

She hopes that their flame hasn’t become dim

Even though the snow falls fresh at their feet

She is anticipating the next time they meet

So she lays back and wishes to the sky,

Not for herself, but for this guy

She wishes him a better life,

One without bad timing and strife

She wishes him a better place,

Even though she’ll miss his face

She wishes that she could be there with him

To take away the pain, to smile and kiss him

He used to love her years before,

But now she’s sure that she loves him more
