Prologue

Life has never been easy on me, especially through my younger years, during which I was sheltered and naïve beyond belief. But in the past few years, I have matured, and I have seen more than any other girl my age would have seen. The lessons Amaya provided me with to make me into a better Queen for the people of Langlin certainly went a long way to make me mature, yet only recently have I discovered hidden wellsprings of strength and courage that I never thought that I had before. How I have changed from the naïve and innocent high school student into the strong and wise Warrior Queen I am now!

Even as I write this, I cannot help but wonder what I miss more, the loss of Amaya’s constant and intense presence in the back of my mind, the life that I had led before Langlin, or the innocence that once defined me before the War of Qeutzal. So many things have changed, and I have no doubt that had anyone from my old life seen me today, they would most likely have been unable to recognize me as the timid girl who was afraid of her own shadow. I have changed, I suppose, I have seen too much, and I have taken lives, be it on the battlefields or through an order of execution.

The War of Quetzal… It was in hopes of preventing this war that the people of Langlin crowned me Queen so quickly. Sadly, it was to no avail, and the war went on nevertheless, even despite the attempts of my nobles and myself. In the end, it was fight back or be slaughtered, and so, Langlin fought back, and with the full force of our determination to live, we won. Yet, was it truly a victory? So many lost, so many fallen. How many households have lost a father, a brother, a cousin, and uncle, a godfather, a godson, a son, a nephew, or even a mother, a wife, and aunt, a daughter, a godmother, a god daughter, or even a niece? There are many things that cannot be changed, and the War of Quetzal is once one of them. After all, one sees the carnage of war, then when everything is over, one must move on, if not for yourself, then for those who died for you in your place. My position as Demon Queen resulted in the deaths of many loyal people for the sake of guarding my life and virtue, my Advisor, Ilsa Von Vufenstrag was among the dead who fell in my name. I had never imagined that any of this would go so far, that so many would fall, but that is naïve, Langlin was at war, and there are always casualties in war…

I am Magami Hiroko, seventeen years old, Queen of the Demon Kingdom of Langlin. This is the story of my reign and the War of Quetzal, which spanned five years, and perhaps the continuation of my story for future generations. I write here my trials and mistakes that future generations of Queens may learn from my actions, and perhaps, with what guidance I may leave behind, become Queens that are more renowned and accomplished than I ever could be.

My story begins in the human world, which we call Zepphel, in the 21 of October, the year 1995…
