Deep Love

She was sitting on a jack-o-lantern in knee-high yellow boots with green hearts on them, her hands wrapped in funny purple gloves of what looked to be home spun fabric. Her hair was pulled back into a frayed bun with her bangs let loose about her face, hanging over bright green eyes. An odd jacket of mixed colors kept her warm, a contrast to the short skirt she wore about her legs and the belly shirt she wore beneath her jacket. He didn’t take the time to note that the jack-o-lantern she was sitting on was hollow and should be caving in beneath her, but he knew that there was certainly something different about this girl, that’s what made him approach her at first. When he introduced himself she gave him a look like she simply knew absolutely everything about him. “I’m Estell.”

Estell was the most remarkable girl he had ever met in his life, simple fact, no doubt about it. They spent every day together after that first meeting, always doing something. If it wasn’t base-jumping, it was skateboarding down the highway. When he was around Estell he felt immortal, like he could make a million mistakes and never really fail. They spent their nights together as they did their days, wild and exotic. Sometimes he would wake up in the morning to find her on the balcony, dancing for no apparent reason. When he looked at her he could see something so alien, so exotic, that he just wanted to take her away from the world where she could be his and only his forever.

He never asked her what she saw in him, and she never told him. Rather they would just look at each other and know that even if their love had absolutely no answers, it also had no questions, it simply was. There were many forms of love; true love, love at first sight, puppy love, but unquestioned, unforgettable, unimaginable love such as theirs was as exotic as the events they shared, the things they did. “What do you want to do next?” he asked her one early morning as she was dancing on the balcony and he was leaning against the doorframe. “Fly.” She answered and tumbled over the railing towards the street some forty stories below. He leaped to the railing, watched her fall for what seemed like hours and then the winds caught her, held her like that jack-o-lantern that had so unexplainably supported her.

She soared and soared and she took him with her as she passed the fortieth floor, only to keep rising into the air. Together they flew in the clouds of a dawning day as lovers who were inseparable, while all along he knew this was their last day. Estell smiled and she danced and she loved him more deeply than any girl had before or ever would. He held tight to her, her clothes and hair rippling in the wind as they neared orbit. She kissed and held him for a long moment before she let go and continued to propel herself upward. As he fell he was sure to always be looking up at the sparkling green light that was quickly leaving his planet behind.

He shredded through story after story of building until he hit his floor, or rather his bed. The impact wrapped his sheets and covers around him, settled his pillow about his head and lulled him to sleep. When he awoke the next day the whole in the ceiling had repaired itself and for a moment he thought it had been a dream until he saw the odd, mixed colored jacket lying on the railing of the balcony. Taking it in his hand he felt the fabric and smiled, it made him feel like she was near, gave him the invincible feeling that he had always felt when around her. He wrapped it around his waist and closed his eyes, propping his foot on the railing and pushing off. The feel of the wind on his face made him smile, made him think of her. He fell and he kept falling for what seemed like an eternity, he had the feeling of her, of her immortality about him all the way to the end.
