“Life is like a box of chocolates”

Someone very smart-

or was it very stupid?-

Once said.

You bring me boxes of chocolate-

Are you bringing me back to life?-

I like the bittersweet kind,

You like the caramels and marshmallows.

The kinds so sweet they numb your teeth-

I’ve been numb so long, how much will this hurt?-

I tried one of your caramels once;

I got a cavity and sometimes the hole still throbs-

Can you fill the hole I’ve kept so carefully empty?-

I wonder if you’ve noticed

Boxes of chocolate never last as long as they should.

All the good ones are eaten, and the ones we don’t want

Grow stale, and are thrown away with the crumpled box-

Will you decide I’m not good enough?

Will you throw me away in the end?

And it’s either the bittersweet or caramel that goes

Because we do grow tired of trying new things-

And who will throw away who, when we realize

All that’s left is chocolates we never wanted?
