What Makes the World Go 'Round…

Setting: A large room that looks to be decorated for a winter dance, but it is still fully lit with no people. The room itself has some tables to the side that have a few stray leftover plates and cups on them. Blue and white streamers stretch out from the corners of the room to the center of the room. A window to the right side of the room shows the sun is going down and snow is barely covering the ground outside.

(JACY walks in rather hurriedly, blowing on her hands from the cold. She looks to be around seventeen or eighteen)

(EDDIE comes in with JACY, rubbing his hands together. He looks to be the same age. He notices JACY's actions)

EDDIE

You okay, Jacy?

JACY

I'm fine, Eddie. Just a little cold, that's all.

(MOUSE runs in, doing a combination of both blowing on her hands and rubbing them. She's also around the same age)

MOUSE

It-it-it-it sh-should be ILLEGAL f-f-for it t-t-to b-be that C-C-COLD!

(JACY and EDDIE roll their eyes at each other)

JACY

Mouse…just help us get the decorations down.

(JACY, EDDIE, and MOUSE start taking down decorations quietly. EDDIE notices JACY is having trouble with getting down a streamer and tries to help. MOUSE notices this and an evil smirk appears on her face. She gets another streamer down quietly and slinks over to EDDIE and JACY, who aren't facing her. She ties the streamer in a knot to make it into a circle and seems to be trying to put it around EDDIE and JACY when JACY turns around and sees MOUSE's standing there with the streamer)

JACY

Do I even want to KNOW what you're doing?

MOUSE

Uh… standing here?

JACY

I see you've taken down a streamer.

MOUSE

Uh…heh…heh-heh…

JACY

(Gets an evil look on her face)

Why don't you go take down MORE?

(MOUSE runs to the other side of the room)

(JACY smirks and turns back around to take down another streamer. EDDIE approaches her from behind)

EDDIE

(Curious and amused)

What did you do to Mouse?

JACY

Oh, nothing. Scare tactics, that's all.

EDDIE

(Pointing in MOUSE's direction)

She is over there, shaking with fear.

(Laughing a little)

I want to know!

JACY

(Teasing)

Nope.

EDDIE

Please!

JACY

Uh-uh.

EDDIE

Jacy…

JACY

(Sing-song)

No-oo…

EDDIE

(Tries to look innocent)

I wub you.

JACY

I am disturbed.

EDDIE

You're disturbed by love?

JACY

No, wait, what?

(At this point in time, MOUSE starts listening in on the conversation and neither EDDIE nor JACY really notice her)

EDDIE

Uh…

JACY

Rewind.

EDDIE

I didn't just…

JACY

I think you…

MOUSE

I am so confused.

EDDIE and JACY

(Finally noticing MOUSE)

MOUSE!!!

(MOUSE runs off to the other end of the room)

JACY

Okay, what did this conversation start with?

EDDIE

I wanted to know what you did to Mouse because…well, I wanna try!

JACY

Uh-huh, and I said "no", and you said…

EDDIE

"I wub you."

JACY

And I said, "I'm disturbed", and you said…

EDDIE

"You're disturbed by love?"

JACY

And I wanna know what that's supposed to mean, and why you said "I just didn't…".

EDDIE

Um…

(Looks at his watch)

Ohhh, look at the time, I really must be going! TOODLES!

(Starts to walk away)

JACY

EDDIE.

(EDDIE freezes)

GET BACK HERE.

(EDDIE turns around and walks back)

ANSWER MY QUESTION.

EDDIE

(Sighs in defeat)

Are…are you sure you want to know?

JACY

Yes.

EDDIE

I don't know if you'll like what you hear or not.

JACY

Eddie, you're my friend. You can tell me anything.

EDDIE

Jacy, you know we've been friends since we were little kids…

JACY

Yeah…

MOUSE

(Squeals, claps her hands excitedly)

WOOHOO, YAY!!! We've been waiting for you guys to get together FOREVER!

JACY and EDDIE

MOUSE!!!

(MOUSE runs off into another corner of the room)

EDDIE

(Sighs)

Anyways…lately, I've been feeling like maybe we could be… well… more… than… friends…

JACY

Eddie, I don't know what to say.

MOUSE

SAY YOU LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JACY

But I do know it's not that.

MOUSE

(Who is now singing)

(Smiles as she slips her hand into EDDIE's. EDDIE smiles.)
