Maudlin Daydream

On many a night, I imagined your face—
Dark eyes and your bright smile;
Many a day I’ve seen myself in her place—
My eyes closed all the while…

What a maudlin daydream—
Oh what a useless wish!
How fruitless everything seems—
Imagining your kiss!

How hopeless I am for thinking—
There was even a chance!
How pathetic I am for wishing—
For this forbidden romance!

How stupid I am for wanting—
To see this dream fulfilled!
To give in to this haunting (desire)—
To bend you to my will!
