Chapter one

The bell rang signalling the end of lesson. Without thinking I jumbled everything into my bag and left through the exit. Amidst the crowd I hastily looked for a head of long black hair. Then towards the main door I found who I was looking for.

Rachel was my best friend I could tell her everything and anything. I loved her like a sister. As I approached her, she was facing the entrance hall so I tapped her on her back. “Hey, you are never, and I mean never going to believe what just happened in my history class.” Before she had time to even fully turn around to face me let alone reply someone tapped me on the shoulder. I was completely shocked, not only that but I had just seen the look on Rachel’s face as she saw who was behind me. It was a look of astonishment.

I turned around although I already half expected who was stood there. Bright green eyes met mine. Followed by a smile enough to make any teenager go weak at the knees.

“Hey, you forgot your notes,” he said handing me my history folder, full of the previous lesson’s notes. For a second I thought my mouth was failing to function.

“Thanks.” I smiled, but deep down I felt really stupid, I mean this was Deacon why the hell was I acting this way? Rachel made a coughing sound and for the first time I noticed that there were other people around besides him and me. By now she was stood on my left so that she was leaning against the pale blue wall. “Sorry. This is Rachel. Rachel this is Deacon he’s one of two new students.” I introduced.

“Hi,” she said enthusiastically.

“Hey,” he responded. “I didn’t really get a chance to copy them all, so could I maybe borrow them again?” he continued looking at me.

“Sure.” I answered.

“You know Lizzie is a terrible speller you probably won’t be able to understand half the words. But it’s OK though, Lizzie doesn’t mind going through them with you. Do you Lizzie?” what was that I was saying about loving her like a sister? Well I guess you could say that includes hating her like a sister too. Whilst she had been talking to Deacon I had shifted so that I was behind him viciously shaking my head to Rachel, behind his back. But no, she had just lain on the widened cute puppy dog eyes that she knows I can’t argue with.

Deacon turned so that he could see me again.

“That would be great. How about I meet you after school. What do you have last?” words threatened to fail me once more.

“I…”

“She has sociology with me and she’ll meet you outside the gates afterwards.” Rachel spoke for me. Before I had the chance to say another word Rachel was dragging me away towards our next lesson together. Deacon was walking away in the opposite direction. I couldn’t believe this.

Once I was sat down behind a desk with Rachel in our media lesson I began to make sense of what just happened. I had been sat minding my own business in my history lesson when in walked Riley and Deacon. Riley and Deacon after a whole month has passed, they just stroll back into my life, into my school! And just now in the hallway Rachel my best friend of all time had just sort of arranged a kind of date with Deacon and me. Oh god, I was seeing Deacon again after school. Deacon – the ex vampire prince who I hadn’t chosen! Who I still appear to have feelings for!

Well at least one thing was going for me; apparently he doesn’t seem to remember me or anything that happened. Unless of course he was acting that way until he got a chance to speak with me on my own. Which Rachel had just given him. What if he was going to get some sort of revenge on me?

I sighed and looked at the clock on the wall opposite me next to the white board. Quart to eleven, that gives me a little over three hours to get out of meeting him.

At dinner I went into town with Rachel and Ollie, (as sixth form students we have the ‘privilege’ to go into town at dinner.) Ollie is Rachel’s and mine newest friend, we’ve only known him from the start of September. He’s tall about 5”8 (whereas I’m 5”5 and Rachel is 5”4,) has short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.

“So have you two seen the new guys?” he asked his voice smooth. “All the girls are swooning over them, but I knew you’d be different right?” he continued eyeing us up. Rachel gave a cheesy grin and I just looked down at the path studying it as though it was made of gold. He rolled his eyes, “you too then.”

“What can I say?” Rachel spoke confidently “We’re only human.” This time I rolled my eyes. You see Rachel has a perfect figure that any girl would die for. She has long thin hair that hangs half way down her back. All she has to do in a morning is brush it and it’s perfectly straight. Other than the slight feathering it was completely natural, and like most people when they have something perfect they hate it. She hates it. God I hate her. But it doesn’t stop there with the looks. Oh no Rachel has the out going personality to match. What I love about her the most is that she doesn’t care. She doesn’t care what people think of her. She just dismisses anyone who gets on her nerves, which believe me is most people that she knows longer than five minutes except for me, Ollie and Minnie.

“So who’s the other guy?” she asked curious.

“His name is Riley,” I answered. “I can’t believe you’ve got me meeting Deacon.”

“Don’t mention it,”

“I wasn’t thanking you.”

“Time out, will some one please explain what you’re talking about.” Pleaded Ollie.

“Lizzie has a date with Deacon, thanks to me.”

“It is not a date.” I argued.

“What is your problem? I thought you’d be happy I set you up.”

“You did not set me up, he needed to catch up with the notes.”

“Right, and you weren’t about to tell me about him when you said I’m never going to believe what happened in your history lesson.”

“I wasn’t.” we reached town and we bought something to eat, keeping us silent – for the moment.

“So honestly, what are you going to do?” asked Ollie, on the way back to school. It was a good question I had no idea what I was going to do.

“Look if you don’t want to go then just say your parents are against you going out because of what happened.” I thought about it. Rachel was talking about the fact that last month I had been kidnapped ironically while I was walking home from Rachel’s house. That’s when a vampire found me and took me to his prince – Deacon. It turned out that I was the ‘one’ who would end the war, between the two vampire clans, which was bad enough, but then I started to turn into a vampire. After I met Riley the prince of the other clan, even worse I found out that to find the locket that I would either use to turn vampires human or destroy (it was the only thing to end the curse) I had to choose between Riley and Deacon, and that I had feelings for them both and they were both in love with me.

When I’d found the locket instead of destroying it I opened it turning vampires back human, and chosen Riley. Well that’s what I had thought anyway but after seeing Deacon again today, I was having doubts. Of course no one new the truth about the vampires not even Rachel who I could tell anything. Like anyone would believe me and I had no proof. As far as they’re concerned the people who had taken me were safely locked up.

Anyway my parents had been way over protective when I finally was ‘found’ although you couldn’t really blame them. They’d only just started letting me go out again with out them.

When we got back to school I had sociology with Rachel and Minnie. Minnie is another long life friend although Rachel and me only met her from the beginning of secondary school. She has a round face, shoulder length layered dark red hair. With hazel eyes and black rectangular glasses that make her look intelligent, except she is intelligent. I loved her to bits too.

At the end of school Ollie caught up with us and we all walked out of school. That’s when I remembered my earlier problem as I saw Deacon. Students were staring at him as they passed but he casually ignored them. He was stood at the road a second hand black Peugeot parked behind him.

As we grew closer I realised that he was leaning on the car, I felt Rachel’s eyes staring at me silently asking what I was going to do. I still didn’t know.

“Hey, you ready?” he greeted as we reached him. I smiled.

“Err…” should I? I turned to my friends. “OK, I just need to ring my mum – don’t ask.” Did I just say yes? I took out my phone and after a rushed argument I hung up. Deacon took out some car keys and slid into the front seat of the Peugeot. Imagining what we looked like I noticed we probably had our mouths open. His door was still open.

“I’m seventeen,” he answered our silent question.

“You’re a year older than us?” Minnie asked her voice mystical as usual.

“Yeah I turn eighteen in October.” We all nodded it wasn’t unusual for older students to start sixth form if they hadn’t at sixteen. “You coming?” he prompted me. Instead of speaking I stepped around to the passenger side opened the door and sat down. Watching my friends on the path still staring he drove off.
