The lonely beggar woman
Walking down the road,
With no one by her side,
Just hoping for a break.
She is dressed in tattered rags
As she knocks upon your door.
Will you smile and take her in?
Befriend her and let her stay?
Or will you hide behind your door
And pretend that she’s not there?
Leave her on the street,
Your cold heart
Leaving its mark upon
Her bleeding one
Will you shove her aside
Too busy to see that she’s hurt?
Will you ignore her
As she asks for that dollar?
Will you condemn her,
For being alive?
For being worse off than you?
Because no one will give her a job?
Because she isn’t one of the popular people?
Because she isn’t rich?
When really,
She’s probably learned more of life
Than you.
And she appreciates the little things
The dollar that you take for granted
And the home that isn’t enough
For you, anyway.
She only wants a start,
Another one.
But already,
She is better off than you,
Because she has learned,
That nothing's worth having
Unless you've worked for it.
