I wrote this over a period of a few days when I was more intensely, consistently nervous than I have ever been in my life. It's a bit silly, but it made me laugh when I thought of it, which I have found is a good thing when one is nervous.

The Nervous Song: Palpitations in Three Verses

The Child’s Verse

A horse’s hooves go bump-a-dump

Over the planks of a bridge

He looks over the side, a bump-a-dump

Neigh! What a very steep ledge!

Our Verse

Oh what a smile, a bump-a-dump

Shines bright in the dear boy’s eyes

It’s taken awhile, a bump-a-dump

But today my nerves meet their demise!

The Grownup’s Verse

Your poor mother’s heart goes bump-a-dump

As she watches you grow up so fine

And now my dear heart goes bump-a-dump

Just to know that you’re mine!
