Mind Fire

In my head, there’s an imaginary fire. It burns constantly, fuelled by the thoughts I don’t want to think, the memories I don’t want to remember and the feelings I don’t want to feel. Resentment, anger, humiliation, all are fed into the fire, and it only grows and grows, like a monster in the making. Mocking laughter that bites at my heart, words that hurt, tears that I will not let fall. Give them to the fire, watch them burn like a twist of paper, curling over and blackening the edges, over and over again into little ashes that crumble down to the ground, floating in the faint breeze.

Every day, my fire grows, and every day, I add something to its burning depths.

And someday, I know, my fire will consume me.
