Thought I saw you upon the stairs.

I looked twice, you were not there.

Thought I saw you in the hall.

Blinked and you weren't there at all.

Thought I saw you in the study.

As it turns out, I saw nobody.

I only saw a shadow, dark shadow -

My own reflection in the window.

Thought I saw you in my bed,

But it was only in my head.

Thought I saw you in the shower

And in the garden picking a flower.

Thought I saw you here and there,

But I realise I've seen you nowhere.

I only saw a shadow, nothing more.

It was my own shadow falling 'cross the floor.

Thought I heard the piano play.

I know you used to play that way.

Thought I heard your silenced cries,

Which, I admit, I once despised.

Thought I saw you in the mirror.

You were gone when I looked clearer.

I only saw a shadow, nothing else.

It was simply a reflection of myself.
