“Rain… never liked it much but I have to get home some how… damn it..." the twenty-six year old women grumbled to her-self. The rain was torture on her. The crashing thunder and lighting bringing back painful memories that she would rather forget completely, wishing that they had never happened.
Just five houses down from the women, in an orphanage two people, a man and a woman, were arguing some-thing. The woman was in a pale brown house dress and kind hearted, it showed in her face. The man wore a tunic and trousers, he was hard faced and it definitely effected his personality.
“You know that we cannot keep one more child here! We have enough of them as it is!” the man yelled only causing the baby in the woman’s arms to cry louder, “well then what are we to do then? throw this baby out on the streets?” she shrieked, the man stormed out of the room while throwing his arms up in the air.
The woman sat down and rocked the little girl back and forth causing the baby to stop its crying, “don’t worry little one we’ll find you a home very soon… don’t mind him… he’s just a stubborn old goat is all…” the man walked back into the room, “ I HEARD THAT!” he bellowed.
The 26 year old had heard the two fighting and was now watching them through the window; she decided to stop them before somebody got hurt. Not that she was that bothered by the fact that the two were fighting, but it was the fact that, despite who she was, she had always wanted a child of her own.
She pounded on the door with her gloved hand, when nobody answered she pounded harder, the shouting from inside stopped and the women opened the door, “yes? how may I-" her face turned white in a second.
“Your-your….” the woman stuttered, she was scared stiff of the woman standing in front of her.
“Kailin Shadowen, I know” the younger woman replied, she looked slightly desperate, her amethyst eyes searching the older woman’s face for anything but fear. It made her stomach twist into a knot knowing that she could put such fear into a person merely with her presence.
The woman was so scared that she tried to close the door in Kailin’s face but she put her foot in the door, “I didn’t come here to kill like you think I have! Open the door,” the woman still looked apprehensive, “please open the door?” Kailin asked getting frustrated the woman opened the door and let the assassin in.
“And besides….” Kailin started as she took off her coat, revealing that she wore only black, demonic looking clothing that revealed little of what was so obviously an attractive form. “I’m soaked head-to-toe with freezing rain water,” Kailin's amethyst eyes rested on the child in the woman’s arms.
“I take it that she isn’t yours,” the woman nodded, “no she isn’t”. Kailin held out her arms, “may I?” the woman wasn’t to keen on the idea of a cold blooded killer such as Kailin Shadowen holding the child. “I’m a killer with a good heart,” she joked, the woman gave a very uneasy smile and handed the child over to Shadowen.
Kailin held the baby as if she was made of thin, fragile glass. Children always fascinated her to no end, they were just the smaller and more helpless versions of humans or any other creature that chose to create these fascinating little beings.
The two people never thought that a killer such as Kailin Shadowen could be so gentle when it came to children, “I’ll take her off your already full and overflowing hands…” Kailin stated, her gaze never left the little girl in her arms, “but-“ the man was cut off when Shadowen put a chunk of gold the size of a walnut on the table, he smiled greedily. “Done!” just as the words left his mouth Kailin turned around with the most deadly and unpleasant expression either of them had seen.
“But if I find that you have used that to feed just your slimly little face and not this kind woman and the children here I’ll come back and dye the floors red with your selfish and greedy blood!” after that Shadowen took her coat and walked out the door back into the rain but she kept the baby dry and warm inside her coat.
Kailin was a wanted criminal, some how, she had evaded King Ikrane's guards for a very long time. Kailin was sure that the royal couple considered her a danger to their still young children. Telen, their girl, was only eight at the moment, while Gareth, their boy, was seven. Shadowen ducked behind a wall as a few of the royal guard came down the street, but the small child unwittingly gave her away.
The men spotted Kailin through the foggy and damp weather instantly when the baby cried out. Kailin knew that she would be hindered slightly by the child she cradled within her coat. The woman turned quickly and ran, the guards behind her picked up their pace, although they did wonder why Kailin had broke into a run rather than jump onto the roofs around her to get away.
They chased the unfortunate through the streets, she kept turning corners until she noticed how low the roofs were around her. She quickly fastened her coat so that the child could still breath, she picked up her pace, braced her legs in a split second and jumped up to the roof next to her. Kailin clung on tightly to the edge of the building, her nails digging into the slick stone before she pulled herself up onto the roof.
She quickly ran along the way she had come from, the guards had unfortunately spotted her dark shape and chased hurriedly after her because she was inadvertently, heading for the palace.
Kailin realised her mistake too late as she had jumped the next one far to high and far too long. She came into contact with a solid brick wall, she cursed foully as an arrow almost hit her shoulder. Kailin climbed the wall and into a window after she had silently and carefully opened it. Then with a rather loud thump as she landed on the ground and woke the occupants of the room.
"Oh god…" Kailin’s eyes widened in fright as she saw who the people were. King Ikrane and the Queen Lestial . They both looked very shocked, only Ikrane looked suddenly protective and a challenging glare came to his eyes.
Kailin seemed to panic and backed quickly away to the window. "Just so you now I don’t want to kill your family, I don't kill royalty or children for that matter. I only go for those who deserve it. Just think as me as someone who enforces 'cruel irony' right?" Kailin was now perched on the window sill. The woman suddenly shrieked as a well placed arrow struck her left shoulder from behind.
Her grip on the window frame unlocked and she fell back wards, disappearing into the fog down below...
