A New Friend
Kailin sniffed the air again, she snorted in disgust. Nothing, how had that snake disappeared so fast? She pressed her knees a bit into Xagereth’s sides, he trotted along the path, the woman on his back looking straight ahead, but her eyes were darting from place to place.

She got the feeling that someone was following her, they were moving through the trees, fast and sure footed. Some body wanted her dead most likely, Xanek had probably sent someone after her to get her off his tail. Kailin narrowed her eyes slightly, fool.

The Anpire halted Xagereth and she dismounted, hand going to her hidden sword beneath her coat. She pretended to be holding her belt as she stroked the black stallions neck.

Kailin walked forwards a few paces, seeming to look around to see if she could camp here, the sun was setting anyway. But camping here, not that close to water, would be stupid. With it being close coming to winter, Ice Demons would be in abundance.

Ice Demons were human in shape. They had icy blue skin colour, black eyes that seemed to have no end and slender spines that went down their back in sails. They also had these spiny sails on the backs of their calves and the outer side of their forearms. Ice Demons were hostile creatures with fiery tempers, nearly all wild Demons were hostile and barbaric beasts.

Kailin ducked quickly as a young man jumped from the trees, he tried to slash at her with a dirk but she kneed him in his groin, grabbed his ear, twisted it savagely and she dug her sharp nails into it. She then grabbed his arm with her other hand, twisting it behind his back in the most uncomfortable position and forced him to the ground, her foot pushing onto his back.

He yelped, his ear still bleeding profusely as Kailin mercifully let go of it. He was a tall man, and had strong, supple limbs and a slender frame. His black, shoulder length hair was cut in lengthening layers around his head, his eyes were glowing indigo, he had tanned skin and a handsome face. He was another rare creature, but from an entirely different place to where she came from.

Somewhere in Karnadan, but Kailin didn’t know where.

“What in hell were you doing?” she asked harshly, he stayed silent. Kailin twisted his arm higher up his back, he groaned loudly with the pain. “I’ll ask you again,” she said softly, but cruelty was clearly hidden behind it. “What were you doing?”

“I was following you,” he muttered, “Xanek sent me to kill you!” he shrieked like a madman. Kailin scowled at him, she knew that by the way his eyes were glowing, he was out of his head, Xanek was controlling him like he had done to her.

Kailin spoke a spell, the man went limp, he was out cold. She then released him from the control of Xanek. The Anpire lifted the man up with a bit of difficulty, he was taller than her, if they stood up straight she would reach below his shoulders. Kailin then slung him over Xagereth’s back.

The man awoke to a fire, he was confused at first to find that his hands and legs were tied. He looked over to a crouched figure, the person was next to a stream, their arm darted into the water and took out a fish, it squirmed before the person dug their dark nails into it.
The person turned around and he saw that it was the woman he had attacked. “I’m sorry I attacked you miss,” he tried to apologise, she looked at him with narrowed eyes, “don’t bother, he controlled me as well,” she explained bluntly. The man struggled slightly, Kailin reached behind him, undoing that bonds as she could see that he wasn’t under the spell any more.

“By the way, my name is Dryal,” he said. Kailin nodded slightly, “Kailin, Kailin Shadowen,” she had purposely said her last name, she wanted him to go away, the last thing she needed was someone following her as a travelling partner…

“So. My last name is Kaydren. I do know about you, but I know about you from the ones you’ve helped out and they know about it,” he said. Dryal looked suddenly sheepish, “Um, I don’t like travelling alone…” he paused, “that’s how I got into the mess with that Shadow Demon. Could I travel with you?” he asked hopefully.

Kailin groaned inwardly, but she knew that he would be dogging her if she said no. “Fine…” she muttered, this was going to be a long hunt.

------- The Next Day -------

Kailin sniffed at the air now and then, searching for Xanek’s scent. She had a faint trace of it, but he could move fast and he might have deliberately gone in different directions to lead her astray.

Dryal was stealing looks at the Anpire, she looked exactly as his father had drawn her. Shadowen had helped Dryal’s father when he had been mugged by a group of men, she had heard and had beaten those gang up, she then returned with his fathers possessions. He thanked her, she shook her head and put a finger to her lips, telling him to keep this silent, obviously, this did not work.

Dryal snapped his eyes away when Kailin almost caught him looking, she narrowed her eyes and was just about to say something bitter when Xagereth, sensing something near-by, reared up, whinnying in panic and galloped off. “Whoa boy!” Kailin tried to calm the creature but he kept moving.

She was able to turn him around, reluctantly the horse galloped back to where Dryal was trying to fend off the creatures, Kailin didn’t know what they were.
Kailin took out her sword, a slender but powerful blade riddled with powerful yet unknown spells. She slashed at one of the creatures, it let rip an unearthly shriek and swiped at Kailin, its white-blue crystal claws raked against her side, but only sparks flew. Kailin jerked out of the way, the vibration of claws raking against her very thin, light but incredibly strong armour was a bit uncomfortable.

Dryal had a broadsword out as he defended himself against the creatures. Kailin rushed around the group of ten, her eyes snapping into scarlet as she continually ran them through with her blade, white fire bursting from the creatures injuries as they got cut up by the relentless Anpire.

Quite suddenly, the hunters had become the prey.

The creatures suddenly crumpled to the floor, there were only shadowy pools on the ground, five of them, Kailin had killed the rest. The pools suddenly slinked of very fast, back into the shade of the forest, and most likely back to their master, whoever that was.

Kailin’s eyes were still scarlet as she seemed to look at Dryal, for she had turned to her head towards him. “Get on,” she orderly silkily, Dryal wasted no time in following her orders. He got on the back, his arms going around Kailin’s slender waist so that he wouldn’t fall off easily.

The Anpire’s eyes snapped back to normal, her cheeks were suddenly a darker shade of purple with the feeling of his arms around her waist. She blinked and urged Xagereth to move on, the stallion happily galloped off, forcing them both to lean forwards…

Kailin swore mentally, why had she allowed him to come along?
