Shadows

by fabian cortez

“I see you tremble; just walk on by, for

This is my home, unless of course, beneath

Its earth with me, you wish to lie”

by Anon

Peeling patterns scribe

This brickwork, as

Memoirs of a life

That filled a shell

Became a home

Amongst my

Shadows

-

Adorning walls were

So impassioned a

Perspective, as to

Encourage a new life,

Sending blood coursing

Eagerly to flesh,

-

Soon, so well entwined

Amongst brushes

& cut paper,

Now seen hanging,

Wretched, torn unevenly

In state

-

Entrance, smashed

& scorched, once saw

Bridal gown & tuxedo

Garner its way & tiny

Hand soon clasped

Its handle

Tight

-

Crib’s ashes, now hold

A resting place,

Amid blackened

Pastels & soft toy

Remnants of coos,

Gurgles & first

Words, such joy

& laughter, now

Suit chilling silence,

-

Passers by,

Shiver, as nought,

But echoes of flame’s

Charcoaled

Heritage remain

-

Yet parapet still stands

In testament, heed caution’s

Gentle breeze; staying

Here shall ne’er bring

Joy,

-

For I lived &

Died here long ago,

It was

My coffin

-

As a boy
