What happened to the day

When a man would take

The hand of a friend

In a warm firm shake

And when the lady

The stairs descend

All else he was doing

Promptly would end

Then at the bottom

He would bend low

Kiss her hand,

All his love to show

Lead her to

The ball-room floor

And for the rest of the night

Her eyes explore

Respect for each other

Equality and love

A midnight stroll

With the stars above

Then when the time

Was perfect it seemed

The two would kiss

Like they’d both dreamed

He’d escort her home

A gentlemen to the last

They’d savour fleeting moments

Before they’d slipped past

What happened to the day

When a man would take

The hand of a friend

In a warm firm shake
