Chapter 1

Jesse sat in the back of the small, blue Toyota hatchback, bored out of his mind. He was on his way to school. He went to a boarding school, Birch Grove High, and was just about to start his third year there. Birch Grove was a boarding school, and summer had sadly just ended.

Jesse Waters had brown hair, just long enough to pull into a small ponytail, and brown eyes flecked warmly with gold. He was built heavily, with broad shoulders and muscular arms. He was wearing normal clothes, a baggy blue t-shirt with some random brand name, and baggy jeans that were ‘held up’ by a studded belt. Of course his boxers were also sticking out by a mile, he was just going with the trends after all. Today he had his hair messily down, with his favorite gray toque pulled down, almost covering his eyes. Jesse was a very normal boy, except for one… small… detail….

He was half elf.

This was, of course, why he and his younger brother went to Birch Grove, instead of another high school. Among the one thousand normal human students mingled more than two hundred magical ones. Hidden, of course. They certainly don’t want to cause a stir.

Wynter Waters, Jesse’s adoptive younger brother, was starting his first year at Birch Grove. Wynter had straight, mid-back length blond hair that was actually light blue on closer inspection. Although his eyes were a beautiful icy green, you couldn’t tell that at the moment, as they were closed in slumber. He had pale, almost white skin, but he didn’t look unhealthy. As he slept, whisps of icy air spiraled from his lips. He was wearing blue jeans and a white QuickSilver t-shirt. Wynter was an ice sorcerer, and had no other magic.

In the front of the car, Jay Waters, the father of the two boys, was behind the wheel of the Toyota. Florisa Sunshine, his elven wife, had left many years ago, but he took good care of his two children, even though one was not really his.

“Wyn. Hey, Wynnie. Wake up, we’re here.” Jesse poked his brother’s shoulder in an attempt to wake him.

“Huh? Wha…” Wynter’s icy eyes fluttered open.

“We. Are. Here. Slow much?”

“Oh. Uh… okay.” This was Wynter’s first day in real school. He had been home schooled, as all magical folk, his entire life. A nervous icy tendril escaped between slightly parted lips.

Jesse pulled his bags out of the trunk of the car, and barely had time to set them on the ground before a blond blur hurtled at him out of nowhere. “JesseJesseJesseJesseJESSE!!” It squealed, nearly knocking the air out of him in the world’s tightest hug. The half elf didn’t need to see the vampire striding towards him to know who the hyperactive creature of ultimate blondness was.

“Will you get off of me, Sammie?” Jesse choked out, trying to elbow the giggling nymph off of him.

“Down, boy.” Dallas, the vampire in question, physically intervened, wrapping an arm around the blond boy’s chest and dragging him off.

“Aww.” Sammie pouted, giving Jesse big, blue puppy dog eyes. Sammie was a very thin, feminine boy, with big blue eyes and blond hair nearly down to his knees. As all nymphs, he hated wearing clothes, but was nonetheless wearing a hot pink wifebeater and tight whitewashed jeans. That was when he saw the vampire standing behind him. “Dallas!!” He squealed, throwing his arms around the smug boy’s neck.

Dallas had very pale skin, but he also had straight black hair about the same length as Wynter’s. Slightly pointed teeth showed through his smile, and he had a single silver piercing just below his lip. Steely gray eyes held a haughty expression, like ‘Haha. Look what I got.’ Of course referring to the nymph seemingly permanently attached to his arm. He wore a black hoodie despite the late summer heat, and several studded cuff bracelets adorned his wrists. He was also wearing dark, baggy jeans and black skate shoes. One of his feet held his skateboard in place.

“I MISSED YOU!!” Sammie squealed, squashing the vampire tight.

“I was gone for five min-uph!” He was cut off in the middle of the word by Sammie’s lips on his. He was annoyed for about a tenth of a second. Then he was totally absorbed in the experience.

Wynter, who was more or less hiding behind his older brother, peeked cautiously from behind his back. He quickly withdrew his head again.

“Still together then?” Jesse smirked as they broke apart.

“Yup.” Dallas replied, as smug as ever.

“Disgusting, ain’t it?” a voice scoffed from behind them, making poor, cornered Wynter jump about a foot.

“Hey Ava.” Jesse smiled when he saw his other best friend, a dark-skinned werewolf.

“Hey yourself. Who’s the cutie?” She directed her hard gaze down at Wynter, who was now feeling even more cornered and trying to figure out how he could hide from both the strange kissing boys and the frightening girl.

“This,” Jesse dragged his shy little brother into her full view, much to his alarm. “Is Wynter, my brother. He is rather shy, if you haven’t noticed.” He looked down at the anxious fourteen-year-old kindly. “Go with dad to find your room, okay? I’ll see you later.”

“Edgy much.” Ava said, gaze following the pale boy as he darted across the courtyard. “Is he always that pale, or is this a new thing?”

“He has ice magic.”

“Sense much. I get it now.” Ava had long, lustrous black hair, and a red cloth tied around her forehead. She had a full figure, large lips and hard brown eyes. She wore the normal hoodie and flared jeans, and dirty white Vans on her feet. She also had a slightly wolfish grin.

The school itself was built on a hill, and was a very old building. It used to be the mansion of a very rich overlord. “Did you guys get us a room together?” Jesse asked Sammie. Any sane person would have asked Dallas, but the vampire was otherwise occupied with his boyfriend’s neck. Sammie just giggled and nuzzled Dallas’ head with his face.

“Hey. You with the neck fixation.” Jesse poked the vampire’s shoulder.

Dallas looked up, slightly peeved. “It’s not a fixation, it’s a fetish. And this better be damn good.”

“Are the three of us in a room together?”

“Is that all?”

“Err… yes?”

Dallas looked around before chancing a brief flash of his deadly three-inch fangs. Then he returned to Sammie’s neck.

Jesse had just finished setting up his bed. There were only two beds in the dorm room, but Sammie and Dallas didn’t mind sharing. They weren’t at that moment though. Dallas was still attached to Sammie’s neck.

Ava walked in. Her eyebrows nearly disappeared into her hair at the sight of the snuggling boys. “How long has he been at it?”

Jesse shrugged. “I reckon about eight hours by now. Give or take.”
