Is it enough to say I admire him?

A young man

Captured in greys,

Wearing black,

Shadows under his eyes,

A cigarette

And a frown

That is a generation.

Whether it's true or imagined, I'm not sure,

I didn't know him.

The eyes are vacant, staring --

Dreaming, maybe?

Or perhaps they're like the mouth,

Carefully cultivated by many

And captured by few,

By him.

He's a golden cow, raised on golden sand in Sunset Boulevard,

Starring in three epics

Projected on white screens

To last a lifetime.

What lifetime? What time did he have?

Was it too short?

Or did it last long enough

To make a man that will never age?

He was still a person,

Troubled,

Who dreamed forever and lives today,

Who lived young and died fast.

He was still a person and

Not for us to hold and mould and say we understand.

Lonely, and inspired, and talented --

Was that who he was? I don't know,

I didn't know him.

But is it enough to say I admire him?
