Candlelight

We stayed in that night
To dine by candlelight.
The soft music he set to play
Made my heart at bay.

I took the food and ate it
That which he had created.
He watched me from across the table,
Wondering when he’d be able.

When I looked up at last
He stared back, his gaze held fast.
I could tell he had intentions,
For in his face I saw this mentioned.

He stood and said, “I will return,”
And left to try to learn.
He wanted to know what my answer would be
If he decided to ask it of me.

In the kitchen he pulled it out,
His features full of doubt.
He turned it over in his hand
And thought to himself, “I can’t.”

“She will surely say no,
And my heart will sink low.
If I can’t have her now,
I will always wonder how.

On the other hand, if she says yes,
My heart will be a mess.
I’ll never leave her life again,
For her mind I will slowly mend.”

I looked up and saw him come in,
His head lowered without a grin.
He stood by his chair for the longest time,
And I knew something was on his mind.

“Now’s as good a time as ever,
To bind our lives forever.
I must ask her for her consent,
To see if we are meant.”

Slowly he said my name,
His face did not look the same.
He looked so afraid and small,
Not brave or proud at all.

“Dear,” he said real slow,
“There’s something I must know.”
He kneeled down before me,
And took a place on one knee.

He saw my eyes grow wide,
And I’m sure he thought inside.
What he had wanted for so long,
Seemed so very wrong.

Instead he pulled from behind his back
A small box of such deep black.
He held it carefully up to me,
And opened it so I could see.

Inside was a diamond ring,
I’d never seen such a thing.
It glistened in the light,
As I’m sure it would in the night.

The stones held such beauty within,
And the band was so small and thin.
I knew right away: a perfect fit,
And in my eyes a fire was lit.

So his lips formed gentle words
Of love that seemed absurd.
He asked, “Will you marry me?
And let us forever be?”

He thought he had made a mistake,
For tears streamed down my face.
He stayed silent as I cried
And gently, lightly, he sighed.

“Why are you crying dear?”
He asked, the answer he did fear.
But his fear was in vain, more or less,
For after, I soon said, “Yes.”
