The Devious Peacock
by Siberia

Note: My Mechanics & Waves T.A. reminded me of this bird.

From the day they met
He longed to possess
This clever female
Who studies the stars
And the soulful heart
As well as he does

Although she is plain
Like any peahen
He falls for her charms—
A surprising end
She did not intend!

Wishing to court her
He unfurls his tail
Like a rainbow sail
Each pompous feather
Displays his splendour

While on the green grass
He confers knowledge
And nurtures her gifts
As if to proclaim
To his new beloved:

"See how much I care!
I want you to fly
To the sky, as high
As your spirit dares!
There is no limit
To what you can do
When I am with you!"

Oh, how hard he tries!
Fluttering his wings
Moving back and forth
Circling round and round
To prove his great worth!

She observes his waltz
With wry amusement
But this girl's no fool
For in the calm pool
A light grasps her eyes
That doesn't seem right

In the reflection
She spots what he hides
Past the palisade
Of lofty plumage:
His beautiful mate
And their infant child!

Still, the suitor struts
With false promises
Dripping from his mouth
Unaware that Truth
Had already told
His secret to find
A young concubine

And as he twirls in
Kaleidoscope dance
The girl, unimpressed
Chuckles in disgust
At his ardent lust

"He's so pathetic!"
Her angry voice seethes
"Nothing more than a
Lewd peacock in heat!"
