I stared absentmindedly at the ugly gray skies, watching starlings fly by. The familiar pittering-and-pattering on the saturated ground was starting to get very, very old. Due to the rain, I was getting a ride home from my best friend.

“How do you do it, Bailey?” Fiona asked.

She was referring to why I was so ‘thin and pretty’. It was a good question.

I don’t exercise; I eat a lot of junk food and I don’t put anything like makeup or acne wash on my face. But I wasn't completely repulsive! Wowzers. You couldn’t find any other girl in Seattle who was like me.

What could I say? I’m unique.

“Good genes.” I replied.

I had to give this to my hippie parents. My Vietnamese mother gave a contribution of a slender figure and perfect skin. My African American father left me with the ideal height. It was stereotyping in a way but a lot of Asians were short. What I prized most, however, was my grandfather’s cerulean blue eyes. It told everyone that I was mixed and proud of it. Of course I had to pay a price for my appearance.

My name was Bailey Universe Smith-Tran! Can you believe that? It needed to be changed. Most of my life, I’ve been open-minded. For example, I used to believe in magic. I accepted the fact that I have a brother fourteen years younger than me. But my name was a different story.

I’m seventeen, too old for this hippie crap. God, why didn’t they just name me “Star Sunshine the reject”?

Fiona laughed. She waited for me to get out of her Mercedes, and then drove off. Quickly my mood changed to default. I was a depressing person when I wasn’t with Fiona. She was my best friend and currently my only friend.

Why am I a repellent?

I unlocked the door to my house. No one was home yet. My parents were off at work and my brother Greg was at preschool. Like always.

I went up to my room and flicked on the light switch. It was a good thing that my father inherited this place from some geezer. We used to live in a tiny condo. My room was plain but I liked it. I only needed a few pieces of furniture and a few electronics. I sat down and started my homework.

In the middle of math, an evil subject, I heard a thud behind me. I spun around to find a guy in my room. He was pretty cute. He had shiny emerald eyes and dark-brown wavy curls. I stared at him and he stared back at me.

Cute boy in my room. Cute boy in my room!

Suddenly, I remembered that he was trespassing. I tried to scream but I could only make a croaking sound.

“You are slow, it took you about three minutes to scream and it wasn’t even that good. Hi, I’m Kenny.”

I felt something jab into my left arm and there was a blinding red light.

Oh god, where am I?

I found myself in a very dark room. I was standing up and leaning against a wall. I took a few steps forward and smashed into something hard.

What the-

I was in a closet. In a freaking closet.

Why am I in a closet?!

I groped for the knob, twisted it and pushed. Guess who was waiting for me on the other side?
