Because We’re Going to a Carnival Today

Because we’re going to a carnival today,
We’re going to visit a place void of time.
The carnival will receive snow at midday.

I will jump and scream, run and play,
The snow a feathery white of its prime,
Because we’re going to a carnival today.

The flakes will gleam a pure white on the golden, smelly hay.
It will cover and purify the carousel’s begrudged grime.
The carnival will receive snow at midday.

The season of both our births will have its magical way
When he smiles his Clown Smile, I’ll hear a pinging, cartoonish chime.
Because we’re going to a carnival today.

We will never see the desolate ticket booth’s gray.
The carnival will not have a single line.
The carnival will receive snow at midday.

His nose will be beet red and curly hair will stray.
Despite the sharp breeze and the modest sun, his childhood will shine.
Because we’re going to a carnival today,
The carnival will receive snow at midday.

A/N: This is for my father, who seems to be losing his vigor in life. I love him terribly and wish I could take him on some magical, childish trip to an abandoned, forbidden carnival and bring out the clown he used to be. (He really had a career as a clown.) He was born in the dead of winter and this is a poem about a rebirth in him.
