Just Listen

by spootasia tomoe

--

--

sometimes some things die

and sometimes some things live

sometimes we can’t help but win

and leave all them behind

moving on filled with survivor’s guilt

I know you’d like to save them all

I know you think I don’t know why

but I was like you once

starry eyed and young with trust

but then I moved out and down

and turned on the news every night

and even mute without the violent sounds

I learned to know better

so listen, but don’t you quite believe

just hear my words and heed my spite

because one day you’ll see

it’ll get to you too, it always does

so remember to peer around the corners

and don’t wait out in the dark

your innocence will one day leave you

and take with it the gauze

wrapped tight ‘round your eyes against the sun

but don’t wait ‘til then to comprehend

we want you to be around

to realize that we were right

so persevere, keep your soul, hold it tight

they’ll collect on that contract later

then you can do whatever the hell you want

with whatever the hell is left

by that point, though,

you won’t care

don’t trust me

but listen.

I know.
