she sits at the window, forehead against the glass
the city lights are reflected in her glassy stare
there’s an old crumpled up note in her hand
and the tears run down her face as she thinks about
how complicated punctuation makes everything
it’s hard enough to open your eyes in the morning
just without everything falling down on you
but it was what he said that drove in the knife
it all ended for her when he told her goodbye

it seems like heartbreak’ll find everyone one day
tie a noose around your heart and watch it sway in the breeze
things didn’t have to be this way
his-and-her initials carved into the oak tree
and it doesn’t really get to you
but sometimes it hurts so much you wanna scream
if there was a little less love in the world
it might not be so bad
it wouldn't be so bad for you and me

you can learn to love anything if you need to bad enough
but she learned to hate the memories:
days at the beach thrown out the window
she can’t stand the smell of fresh-cut grass anymore
and there's no more postal service on the radio
she just wants to hurt him, hurt him and die
some days it can get that bad
every morning she paints on that love-me smile
just to hide that she’s bleeding inside

it seems like heartbreak’ll find everyone one day
tie a noose around your heart and watch it sway in the breeze
things didn’t have to be this way
his-and-her initials carved into the oak tree
and it doesn’t really get to you
but sometimes it hurts so much you wanna scream
if there was a little less love in the world
it might not be so bad
it wouldn't be so bad for you and me

there isn’t enough honesty between us
there isn’t enough honesty between any of us

it seems like heartbreak’ll find everyone one day
tie a noose around your heart and watch it sway in the breeze
things didn’t have to be this way
his-and-her initials carved into the oak tree
and it doesn’t really get to you
but sometimes it hurts so much you wanna scream
if there was a little less love in the world
it might not be so bad
it wouldn't be so bad for you and me
for you and me
