Chapter 3

tick tock, tick tock

Damn you clock! 15 minutes is keeping me from eating lunch!

I mean, as much as I love to learn about the holocaust in World History, I am too hungry to pay attention.

tick tock, tick tock

I mentally groaned.

“Lily, do you have a problem?” I heard my teacher say.

Oops… I guess my groan wasn’t very ‘mental’…

“No, Mr. Brown,” I replied meekly, embarrassed, blushing lightly.

“Good, now pay attention.”

“Yes, sir.” So hungry…

“Many Jews suffered because of their religion. Hitler even killed anyone who didn’t look like what he thought was a perfect person; black people, even midgets. World War II was…”

I stared at the clock.

Only three minutes passed… I groaned mentally (this time I made sure it was in my mind.) This was going to be a long 12 minutes…

“God, Lily, you’re such a pig!” Lisa said at lunch, while she stared at me eating.

Me, a pig? If stuffing your face with food is considered being a ‘pig’, then a proud pig I am!

I swallowed my food. “So?”

“So,” Lisa stated briskly, “If you’re ever going to get a boyfriend, you’re going to need table manners.”

I stared at her obviously annoyed. She has this… delusion, if you will, that one day, some poor guy will take a chance in breaking my ‘I hate men’ faze, as she calls it, and then we will have this story book romance. Lisa was always a romantic. To bad it wont ever happen.

“Aw, leave the poor girl alone,” I heard Sean say as Mark and he sat down, Mark next to Lisa, Sean right beside him.

“Fine but don’t say I didn’t try!” Lisa said, taking a bite of her sandwich. After a moment of frowning, she changed the subject. “Where’s Adam?”

Mark shrugged. “He went to the office to talk to the councilor about his schedule.”

“Oh,” She gave me a fleeting glance. “Well, do you know when he’ll be back?”

“No.” Mark frowned. “Why are you so interested in him?”

“Oh, I’m not,” Lisa said with mock indifference. Or maybe she was indifferent… “I’m just wondering.”

“Wonder anymore and I’ll be forced to believe you like him.”

“I do like him,” Lisa said with a smile. “But no worries, I don’t like him that way.”

“Good,” Mark said with satisfaction, as if he’d accomplished something.

Lisa frowned at this. “’Course, I never told you what way ‘that way’ was.” she told him. Leave it to Lisa to get him worked up over nothing. Lisa got up and threw her trash away.

“What?! How could you like him?”

Lisa rolled her eyes. “I’ll see you in Painting,” she said to me, referring to our next class, before she left.

“No, seriously, how could you? He’s not even that good looking!” Mark said, calling after her.

Right at the moment Lisa was out of view, as if coincidence wanted to piss Mark off, guess who came walking our way? Yep, you guessed it.

“I came back from the office. They told me I couldn’t change my classes because the system was low or something,” Adam told us. “So I’m stuck with Spanish 1 and Algebra 2. Ha, Algebra 2... I always hated Algebra 2. Looks like I’m doing it again, well, at least until ‘further notice’. What a great start at a new school, don’t you think?” He said, shaking his head.

“Do you like Lisa?” Mark randomly (well, to Adam at least) asked.

“Excuse me?”

“Do you like Lisa?” Mark repeated

Adam gave a small grin, obviously getting what Mark was asking. “She’s alright I guess, I wouldn’t date her though. Why?”

“No reason.” But Mark seemed to lighten up at Adams response. “So, stuck in Algebra 2 again? Too bad for you. What period?”

Well that wasn’t and obvious change in subject. Sean and I shared an amused look, even Adam smiled. “Yeah, I have it 5th period.” he told Mark

“With who?” I asked. I have Algebra 2 that period.

Adam dug into his pocket, took out a folded piece of paper. “Mayer,” he read.

“You have Mr. Mayer with me,” I said him. “We have that class tomorrow though, so your safe till then.”

“Why, is he mean?” Adam asked curiously.

“No, his class is just boring. But he’s an easy ‘A’, though, so I shouldn’t be complaining” I said with a shrug.

Mr. Mayer is the mirror image of stereo typical geek of the 50’s; greasy black hair brushed to the side, pale skin, glasses, plaid button down shirts. His dorky jokes don’t help either.

“Really? Doesn’t sound too bad.”

“It’s not so bad, but you try thinking up things to do in math class while trying to look like your paying attention to the teacher while he’s droning on about conjugates,” Sean said.

“That sounds fun!” Adam said sarcastically, with a joking smile. “But, I’m always up for challenges.”

The lunch bell rang about two minutes later. We packed up our stuff and I walked up to my painting class while Sean and Mark went to help Adam find his class.

“So,” Lisa oh-so-subtly said in painting class. “Are you and Adam are friends now? I mean he passed your test, right?”

My eyebrows raised. “I have a test? Why wasn’t I informed!” I said mock indignant. Lisa gave me a look. I smiled. She never was patient. “I wouldn’t call us friends. More like an… acquaintance.”

“Acquaintances?” she repeated, smiling, as if she found it amusing. “Do you think he’s cute?”

“Uh,” I said, uncomfortably, shifting in my seat. I never was good at these things. “I guess.”

Lisa just nodded, giving me the same smile she gave me in Spanish.

Man, what is with her and that smile?? Seriously, what is she up to?
