Hm, I know it's not in the league of Edgar Allen Poe or T.S. Elliot or any of those other poets, but it just came to my mind, so I wrote it out.

The 'Dear' Friend

'My dear friend,' said the bird, looking meekly back and forth.

'If you please, just by looking, can you tell me what I'm worth?'

And the lion, looking down with great dissatisfaction,

Said, 'I shall tell you, my dear friend if you move in just a fraction.'

And the birdie moved quite close, but the lion shook his mane.

'I don't know what I saw in you; your features are quite plain.

You've got nothing going for you; I'll put you out of pain.'

Then with a smile so wide, it scared the bird out of its wits,

Its dear friend opened wide its mouth and ate it all to bits.

And the moral of the story, as they're fond of saying in those books

Is: you should never trust a person who judges you

Based only on your looks.
