If I Said I Loved You

If I said I loved you

What would you say?

Would you sigh with the deep emotions

That I sense beneath your surface?

I can almost feel you sigh

With the deep affection in your soul

When you look in my eyes.

If you said you loved me

I would not be surprised:

When we talk it’s in our own

Intimate little world-

Warm and dark,

And no one else knows-

It feels like we’re so close together,

Setting beside each other,

Holding hands,

Looking in each other’s eyes.

If I said I loved you

Would it be a lie?

You see I think it’s just your feelings

That infect me

And make me think I do.

I can’t love you,

Can I?

Not when I love him

With such an endless-

Timeless-

Devotion.

If I said I loved you

Would he have to know?

I could break his heart

With such words,

And fill yours with joy.

The truth is that I don’t love you-

I don’t think I do-

And it doesn’t matter because

My heart belongs to him:

It’s a fluttering bird I’ve let him

Keep locked in his cage;

You can admire his pet,

But it is still his

In the end.

If I said I loved you

I know it would be true-

Love is so confusing now,

But somehow I know I do-

My heart seems to give and take love

So readily these days.

I accept your love,

I give you mine,

But I cannot-

Will not-

Give you my heart,

Even if I say

I love you.
