Playing the Game

Sprawled under the trees at the edge of the football field
Pages of homework scattered on the grass
The irony of the situation gets me
Since I hate homework
And used to hate you

I lean over to point something out
And brush up against your shoulder
I’m not really sure if what I’m saying is right
But you know the answers anyway
We both know its all an act

You don’t need my explanations
Any more than I need yours
And yet the masquerade continues
As we lead each other on
Pretending the script is unwritten
And blindly waiting for the final curtain call
