Leah couldn’t help but let out an audible sigh as she gazed with forbidden longing at the boy sitting two seats away from her.
He’s hardly a boy, she thought as she watched him flip through a random magazine. She leaned her head back on the plush chair she was lounging in and closed the book she was attempting to continue reading. Bright rays of sunshine made their way into the vast library through the wall to ceiling windows near the back of the room where she sat. Leah glanced in their direction and admired the clear blue sky and lush greenery decorating the school’s courtyard. She eyed a couple sitting on one of the benches that dotted the area and felt a lump form in her throat as she watched the pretty redhead rest her head on her Hollister-clad boyfriend’s shoulder. Ugh.
She wrenched her eyes away from the pair and once again focused her attention on the dark haired boy relaxing on the couch a couple of feet away from her. He now appeared to be deeply engrossed in the new book he was reading as he casually brushed a lock of raven hair away from his eyes. Leah’s focus slid over to the novel in his hands. A book of poems. The corners of her mouth lifted slightly as she glanced back up at him again. A crease had formed between his eyes as he continued to read and Leah smiled at how cute it made him look.
Finally looking down at her own book, Leah ran her fingers lazily over the flawless picture that graced the cover. They ghosted over the woman’s pale, almost white, face and straight, jet black hair and lingered on her painted, red lips. Her fingers continued to roam the cover until they came to rest upon the woman’s slanted, ocean blue eyes. That’s different, she mused, because the woman was Asian. Memoirs of a Geisha, the title read. Leah had already seen the movie a couple of days before and felt compelled to read the novel, knowing it would be just as good.
Raising her eyes back to the haunting blue-eyed gaze of the geisha woman, Leah felt a frown mar her features. Why are blue eyes always the epitome of beauty? She thought of her own dark brown eyes and suddenly felt common and plain. She lifted her hands in front of her face and stared blankly at her warm, caramel complexion and iced pink nails. Black is beautiful. You are beautiful, her mother’s words reverberated in her ears. She smirked and once again peered at the face of perfection between her fingertips, only to be met by a pair of striking green eyes.
A warming sensation hit his cheek and he turned his head and squinted against the harsh glare of sunlight coming through the library windows. Looking out into the courtyard, he caught a glimpse of his good friend Juliet getting cozy with her latest boyfriend. Looks like Juliet found herself another Romeo, Aiden laughed to himself. Juliet was never without a boyfriend and had been that way since they were in middle school. She never kept one longer than three months at a time, something about not wanting to become too attached.
Aiden shook his head, the motion causing his unruly hair to fall into his eyes once again. As he moved his hand to swipe the offensive strands away from his face, he caught sight of a girl sitting in a chair a few feet in front of him. He frowned, slightly surprised that he hadn’t noticed her there before. He closed the book of poems he had been reading and shifted on the couch he was laying on to get a better look at her.
Brookstone was a fairly large high school but this girl was familiar to Aiden. He watched her and she traced invisible patterns onto the cover of the book in her lap. Her long, black hair fell past her shoulders while a couple of pieces framed her oval face. He couldn’t really see her eyes but guessed that they were almond shaped from where he sat. The sunlight illuminated her light brown skin, reminding him of warm honey. She was pretty but not gorgeous, or so Aiden thought, as her hand paused at the top of the book.
Aiden’s eyebrow quirked up in confusion as the girl’s features assembled into a mild frown. She abruptly raised her hands in front of her face and gazed at them with no apparent expression. A sudden smirk appeared on her lush, pink lips. Aiden continued to watch her, clearly amused and unable to tear his eyes away from her, even when her chocolate colored orbs locked onto his own.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking. She’s out with ANOTHER story that she’s NOT going to finish. But hopefully for the New Year I’ll be better at that. My good friend Ysabrylla Noakes has made a suggestion to me and I think I’m going to take her up on it. I’m going to focus on two stories at a time, those of which are going to be this one and Mankind’s Biggest Oxymoron. So review review and perhaps I’ll update sooner! So please have faith in me and once again, if you know of any good interracial romances that aren’t on my favorites list PLEASE let me know! And hopefully this story will end that common demon we all know as Writer’s Block. Happy reading and reviewing!
