& she says:

let’s

let’s go change the world

and ride bicycles in skirts

they’ll call us crazy

& we’ll be icons

& everyone will remember us beautiful

we’ll be armchair patriots of a long-forgotten american dream

we’ll do the things no one thinks of to do

& we’ll be the girls everyone talks about

chit chat watch her go

watch that walk

that hair

that smile

those eyes

watch her

you

you’re hers

under her spell

& they’ll make coloring books of us

in tiaras and cupcake dresses

in colors of little baby chickens

bunny colors

young flower colors

colors a million girls have worn before us

but none looked so beautiful

come and be a lovely thing

so bright, so sharp, so do-not-touch

danger up ahead

danger in a blood-red mouth

& teeth, so white, so hurt

we’ll cheat casinos

and wear the clothes no one wears

and fall down a lot

but that doesn’t matter all that much

if we get up again

we’ll reinvent beauty

we’ll be christian dior

we’ll be audrey hepburn

twiggy

garbo

moss

& little girls will want to be us

little girls will say

let’s

let’s go and change the world

and ride bicycles in skirts

little girls

pretty little girls

with dreams too big for them to know
