Years later, at his daughter's high school graduation, Adrian caught
himself thinking about the day that he had found out Erika was
pregnant. He remembered sitting at the side of Erika's bed, watching
her sleep; he remembered the doctor's reassurances that both Erika and
their child were safe; he remembered his own surprise at finding out
that Erika was pregnant. But most importantly, Adrian remembered the
prayer he had said that day and wondered, as he watched his daughter
walk down the aisle in-hand with one of her fellow classmates, who he
had been talking to.
Taking his wife's hand in his own, Adrian squeezed it gently. Erika
tore her eyes away from their daughter and glanced up at her husband.
"What is it?" she asked.
He leaned over and kissed Erika's cheek. "I love you," he whispered into her ear.
Whoever you are, thought Adrian, I owe you everything.
