Pay the Piper

by fabian cortez

Sitting back from

Those that seek to

Bring about fear in others

To inhibit, their own

Feeling of inadequacy

My lack of regard

Is not depleted

-

We ignore shouts of

Abuse, intended

To wound, or create

Panic un-shown that

Creeps into hidden

Recesses of our psyche

-

They shall not inhabit

Our waking hours,

Yet images of their

Faces being caved in

Bring a certain degree

Of satisfaction

-

We know, as so often

Is the case that

Those offending

Have suffered, at the

Hand of neglect

& Ignorance,

-

We know if they

Received the beating

Considered many times

We would be no better

Than those levelling

Their verbal targets

At us

-

Still, at times it seems

Like cleansing waters would

Wash over us, to be able

To wipe their cankered smiles

Away without regret

-

Yet, it is we that would

Pay the piper

Should this happen,

It is we that would feel

Remorse

-

Where is the justice

In that?
