The Poison Kiss

Chapter 2

Vince had left the bar an hour or so later. It was almost three o'clock in the morning when he had arrived back home. He was rather surprised to find the back door unlocked. Cautiously, he walked straight through the kitchen, then into the living room. As he turned right, he stared up the stairs, making sure that no one was there. He silently crept up them, making sure not to make any unwanted noises. Once he reached the top, he made a U-turn to his left and walked down the hall towards his room. It was at the very end, of course. Most of the other doors were either closed or left slightly open. He finally came upon his own door. Once he stepped into the room, he gently closed the door behind himself. His dresser was to his immediate left. On the closer of the two ends, sat a lamp. He slightly hesitated to turn it on. When he did, he was relieved to see that no one was in there. Somehow he had imagined that Rose or Sandra would be sitting in his room and waiting for him, like in the movies. He then took off his jacket, hooking it over a hanger and placing it on the doorknob to the closet. Then, he quickly untied and slipped off his shoes. Finally laying down upon his bed, he felt that he was finally able to completely relax. The strange thing was that the only thing that Vince could think about was Talisa. It was as if he was starting to feel addicted to her, as he was with his drugs. Every time he tried to think of something else, it would eventually lead back to her. He finally surrendered to his thoughts, for it was not completely and utterly bad, to be dreaming of a beautiful woman, even if she thought herself to be a vampire.

Vince felt that morning had come to soon, that his dreams of Talisa were short-lived. He got out of bed and looked through the blinds that hid the outside world from him. It looked to be a nice day. The sun had already been up for a while, only a few small clouds in the sky threatened to cover it up. He didn't want to go downstairs, he didn't want to have to face Sandra. But he knew that his time would come sooner or later. As he finally came to grips of what was to happen, he walked towards the door. Standing in front of it, he took in a deep breath. He slipped his fingers around the doorknob. Slowly turning it, he felt as if this was the end, that this was the end of the life that he knew. The door slipped open and yet he still stood there. He opened the door all the way, only to look across the hall at the door that lead to the hallway closet. Finally, he forced himself to take a step. Turning to his right, he could see that the doors that had been closed earlier, were now open. Everyone was downstairs eating breakfast. He slowly found his way across the hallway towards the stairs. Once he started his decent down them, he felt that there was no turning back. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, only a small space of wall concealing himself from the others, he started to wonder what was going to happen, what he was going to say. With one more deep breath, he forced himself to take that next step that would expose himself to everyone in the room.

"Look Mommy, it's Vince!" excitedly exlaimed Luc from the table. The room burst into a deafening silence. For what seemed to be hours they stayed there, almost as if they had been frozen in their various positions. Taylor wanted to race over to Vince and hug him, but felt that she had to contain her feelings as she frequently had to do. After another moment or so, Sandra finally broke the silence, "Vincent, please come with me." She walked directly across the room towards Vince. He then turned around and followed her as she lead him back around the corner, out of everyone else's sight. They stood with only about a foot or two separating them. In a whisper, Sandra said, "What were you thinking? Oh wait, you weren't." Vince just looked down in embarrassment, for he couldn't gather enough courage to look his mother in the eye.

Taylor stood on the other side of the wall, hearing another one of her mother's many lectures. It was strange for her to be in this spot, to not be the one who was being lectured for once. Rose only scowled at her from the kitchen table, for she thought that what Taylor was doing was wrong. Luc was playing with his waffles and bacon, somehow dropping some pieces onto the floor. "You have pushed me far beyond my breaking point," heard Taylor as she started to worry where her mother's conversation to Vince was heading. Another moment of silence washed over the house. Finally Taylor's need to worry was confirmed, "Vince, you knew what the consequences of what you did would be, and now you have to take responsibility for those actions," another short break of silence cut through the air. "You can't stay here anymore," said Sandra finally.

A rush of pain, shock, and fear ran through Taylor's body. She quickly ran around the corner to see Sandra, who was trying to hide her sadness. Vince's face seemed to be made out of stone, not letting any emotion escape. "Sandra, please. Don't do this." sadly pleaded Taylor as tears quickly filled her large eyes. Sandra turned around slowly, eventually making eye contact with her youngest daughter. "I cannot allow-" started Sandra, but then being quickly cut off, "Mom, please!" She very rarely called her that. This struck Sandra, it's impact being physically shown by her eyes widening and lips slightly parting. She was speachless. Tears started rolling down each of thier cheeks while Vince still stood there, letting no sign of emotion show through his facial features. Sandra's and Taylor's eyes met once again. Sandra then closed hers while slowly shaking her head up and down. With that, Taylor happily hugged her mother and said into her ear, "Thank you." Vince was then soon enoughcovered by a pair of arms, snapping him back into reality and making him realize what his little sister had done for him.

A slightly angry look played on Rose's face as they all walked back into the kitchen, since she knew of what had been done. Luc, on the other hand, was completely oblivious of anything that had happened. He pealed a piece of bacon that was practically glued to the table by syrup, and stuck it in his mouth. Everyone sat back down at the table, quietly finishing their breakfast. Once they were done, Vince and Taylor went upstairs as Sandra and Rose stayed in the kitchen, cleaning the breakfast foods off both Luc and the dishes.

After walking a few steps up the stairs, Vince turned around to face Taylor and said, "Thanks for saving my ass back there, I needed that." Small grins found their ways onto both of their faces. Taylor was start to feeling some butterflies deep within her stomach. He then turned back around and kept walking up the rest of the stairs, Taylor following close behind. Once they reached her room, she took only a step or so into it. After waiting a few seconds, she turned around and looked down the hallway at her brother as he closed his bedroom door behind himself. A small sigh escaped her lips before she re-entered her own room andfellcarelessly down onto her bed. She laid there thinking of numerous daydreams of which she wished, and prayed, would come true some day.

While downstairs in the kitchen, Rose felt that she could no longer conceal her anger, "Mother, what were you thinking?" Sandra just kept on scrubbing the plate in the sink as if she hadn't heard the question that was clearly directed to her. With more anger in her voice then last time, Rose asked her the same question once more. Sandra let the plate slip back into the soapy water and turned to her left to face her daughter. She then spat out, "She, Taylor, called me Mom. Do you know how rare that is? How much I wish for her to call me that more often?" Now Rose was the speachless one. After taking a moment to compile her thoughts, Rose finally replied, "It's just that you know that he's going to keep using, both you and the drugs. And by giving in, he's going to use that advantage against you even more so now. I want to protect you from him hurting you any further." Sandra stared at her blankly, then said, "I'm grateful for your concern, but don't worry about me. Now, go take Luc upstairs and get him cleaned up."
