Friendship

by fabian cortez

I’d forgotten what

Fresh sheets feel like

Against my skin,

Never seen or smelt

The bluest ocean

You described

So vividly

-

Yet that image now

Plays in my mind,

Where I can almost

Smell the salty air

& feel the crisp fresh

Coolness of the linen,

It’s kept me going

Since we first

Talked, some

Fifteen years ago

-

You appeared

Fresh faced, without

A thought of life

Within a place like

This, I remember;

I had no idea, what

Might be going

On in your mind

-

I figured you’d last

But a few days

I was wrong, as

I have been about

Many things,

Befriending you

Was not

One of them

-

You showed

Such defiance at

Incarceration of

Mind & spirit,

A kind of resolve

Against being

Crushed by wheels

Of injustice, as

So many where

-

Oh, you dealt with

Your share of that

The early years,

Till your wit to

Survive shone

Like a beacon

To us all

-

Still, you lost friends

Along the way;

I was frightened for

You then, also for myself

That I might lose

Our friendship, & so

My inspiration to

Go on

-

I was wrong about that

Too, you dragged

Yourself through

The basest aspects

Life could offer,

So to be reborn

A free man

-

As my liberty is

Granted, I fear my

Ability to cope,

This world

So bustling &

Unknown is such

An isolating

Place

-

After a couple of

Weeks, I see inscribed

A mans name, who

Decided on a different

Course, I think again

Of your inspiration

So finally get on the

Bus

-

I hope

To bathe in the

Cleansing water of

The sea & sleep

In my own bed,

Without shadows

Of fear glancing

My walls at night

I hope to see

My friend

-

I hope
