Straddling his hips like she always did, she stared in to his eyes for a long moment trying to show everything that she was feeling. With her hand slowly running through his hair, she leaned into him, never taking her eyes off his until their faces where millimeters apart. She closed her eyes as their lips touched, kissing him with all the love, desire and passion she felt never removing here hands from his hair.

What seemed like a lifetime later she slowly moved away, ending the kiss. Once again she stared into his eyes. Her hand moved to his face, fingers running over it, touching as if she was trying to capture every contour, every line of his face. Slowly running her fingers over his lips but never saying as word. She continued to stare into his eyes as if she was trying to see inside of him. She could of course, but she never said anything. Eyes an interesting shade of green with brown speckles stared back into those intense pale blue eyes that looked violet in the light.

Both of her hands cupped his face as she continued to look at him. Lifting his face as she slowly moved towards his, lips met one last time. The kiss was remarkably different from the last; this one still filled with love, but lacking everything else. Moving off his lap, she turned and walked towards the table. Picking up her keys, grabbing the gold key and removing it from its home. Once remove she stared at it for a long while.

The whole time sad green eyes stared at her. Never saying what was going on in his mind. They seemed to look right through her uncaring, but he cared. Man did he care. Everything in him wanted to scream “DON’T GO! Please don’t leave me.” Promise to do anything if only she would stay. And he would, he’d do anything for this woman he loved so much. Rob, cheat, steal, kill and he’d gladly die for her, but something was keeping him for doing it. Something deep down that knew there wasn’t a damn thing he could do to stop her.

She placed the key on the table, never turning around, never saying a word. There was nothing more to say. Everything had been said twenty minutes ago. There just were no more words. Walking towards the door with determined steps, each one slowly breaking her heart. She reached the door and opened it, pausing momentarily at the threshold. Releasing a deep breath, she squared her shoulders fighting the urge to turn around. Slowly closing the door as she walked out, never saying anything. And then she was gone.

His eyes followed her the whole time. Watching every move she made, silently praying that she wouldn’t walk through the door. Still he hadn’t move a muscle, hadn’t said a world. He just sat there, watching here leave him for good this time. As she closed the door, his heart fell into is stomach. Every fiber of his being wanted to stop her, but he didn’t because he couldn’t. He knew what she said was true. Although he loved her and she loved him, it had to end. They couldn’t go on any longer. It wasn’t fair to either of them to prolong the inevitable. But if he had just said one thing, maybe she would have stayed, but he knew it wasn’t true. Maybe she’d stay another week, two or even a month, but this would have happened eventually. Only thing good about her leaving now was that she still liked him. If she had stayed, she would have hated him and that’s something he couldn’t bear. She still loved him in some way and that’s all that matters. That’s what made it bearable.

Finally he moved. Got off the chair, walked to the kitchen and picked up the phone. Automatically dialing the number he knew by heart. After two rings, the sweetest voice he’d ever heard picked up.

“Hello”, she said

“Hey it’s me”, he said

“Hey baby, how are you?” she asked

“Okay, how are you?”

“I’m missing you that’s how I am. When are you coming over?”

“I’ll be there in half and hour. Want me to pick something up?”

“Yeah, I haven’t eaten yet.”

“Okay. Thai sound good?”

“Thai sounds great.”

“ Thai it is. I’ll see you in a bit.”

“Okay, see you then.”

“Bye”.

“Bye”.

He hung up the phone, walked into his bedroom and grabbed a pair of socks and his shoes. Never once looking at the empty space by the bed where her book used to be. Somehow not looking made what he was doing all right. He didn’t have to worry about some story to make up or having to say what time he’d be home. He was free to do everything he had been doing the last two months and not worry about any repercussion, because there wouldn’t be any. No more showers before he came home. No more secret meeting times. He could just come and go as often as he pleased. After putting on his shoes, he walked back into his living room and grabbed his keys off the table. Never looking at the one lonely key sitting there. He grabbed his jacket and walked out the door. Effectively pretending that the last hour had never happened. His lifes’ love never came. Never said the words ‘I know’ never asked ‘How could you’ and never questioned ‘Why’. She ended it, not him. So somehow even though he loves her and it hurt, it was okay. He was going to be okay, it was better this way. Of course tomorrow was another day.
