she had often wondered
(as a child, gripping the covers)
why she could see in the dark

why the cumbersome giant
(by day, a mild-mannered hamper,
slightly bent) melted in the light

why the pixies darting under the desk
crumbled to dust (bunnies) and why
the clawing hand at the foot of the bed
never quite reached
before she dove for the lamp

and sometimes,
when the night finally ended

she wondered
(hesitating in the morning)
which side qualified as the
Wrong Side of Bed.
