The Day Maggie Died

The day Maggie died
Dawned cold and wet
She didn’t know she’d die that day
No more did I
We’d just spent the night together
Under the trees
She’d gone inside before I woke
We met in her room
Explored the sheets
When a cry came up
Filtering from down below
“We’re under attack!”
The selkies were here
With pikes and magic
Maggie and I fought them
Back to back
Side by side
Rain pouring in our eyes
A selkie jumped in front of me
I had no time to block
No time to dodge
She stepped in front
Merely grunted as the pike went through her stomach
I carried her away still alive
“Don’t follow” she told me
“The skin’s in my father’s chamber”
I threw the skin of the selkie queen
Out the window to the ground
The rain poured down as I ran
